Xbox 360 Price Cuts and New Editions
Published: August 23, 2005, 3:15 PM CST
By chairmansteve

Now that we know the launch prices for Xbox 360 ($299 Core, $399 Premium), we can speculate on future pricing. Having the HDD separate will really help get prices competitive and flexible.

I'm going to assume that the HDD price will stay at $99 (or drop little) but will later increase in size (40GB, 80GB, 120GB, etc.). For example, $99 may get 20GB at launch and 40-80GB in 2007. For a possible high-end option, $149-199 may get 80-120GB in 2007 and 160-320GB in 2009.

I expect the first US price drop to be around Spring 2007 or at E3 2007 (May). However, it's possible that the first price cut won't come until later in 2007. The first cut should be between $50 and $100. Thus, the Core System should drop to between $199 and $249, while the Premium System drops to between $299 and $349.

Some accessory prices should drop too. I think the 64MB Memory Unit (Flash) price will drop with the introduction of larger Memory Units (e.g. 256MB).

We don't need a leaked email to know that 20GB will be history. Hard disk drive manufacturers don't make them anymore. Within 2 years, 60GB will be history too.

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2008/0713-consolestorage.htm

Today's price cut is only for the Pro 20GB system (from $349 to $299). The Pro 60GB was announced and should be in stock in 2 or 3 weeks.

$299 Pro 20GB ("while supplies last")
$349 Pro 60GB

It would be strange if Arcade and Elite don't see a change by November. Let's say in 2-3 months (Sep/Oct), prices will fall.

July - Price Drop 20GB Pro
August - Launch 60GB Pro
September - Price Drop Arcade and Elite (maybe 60GB Pro too)
October - Holiday Game Bundles
August 4, 2008, 9:25 AM by YoYo
Edit: Pretty much in line with the predictions above.

It seems MS' generosity knows no bounds with yet another price drop rumoured for september most likely timed to put a big dampner of Sonys attempts to make a dazzling comeback with new 80GB model this month.

Early Sept price reduction on X360 hardware:
Arcade (no hard drive) to $199
Pro (60GB) to $299
Elite (120GB) to $399
We should also expect hardware and game bundles for all hardware versions coming in the fourth quarter, just in time for the holidays.

In addition, the mole revealed that the upcoming release of Forza 2 Platinum Hits will include all the DLC tracks that were made for the title, which is a good way to add value to the game.

Adding more proof to this rumor someone caught this photo of some store's computer:

why would you even need a photo to solidify the rumor. chair already had already foreseen these prices a long time ago. his predictions are gold.

Current Price: $199 Arcade, $299 Pro 60GB, $399 Elite

Anything left to predict in the near future? We should get a holiday game bundle next month. So let's move on to the next major change around a year from now. Shall we drop the price? Upgrade the hardware? Both? I say keep $199.

Q3 2009: $199 Mini, $299 Mini Elite

The new Xbox 360 Mini will be smaller, include WiFi, and replace the Arcade. The Elite adds a hard drive.

Q3 2010: $149 Mini, $249 Mini Elite

Some colors other than white and black would be nice. Cut the price again in another two years.

2012: $129 Mini

With the focus changing to the next generation, that could be the end of the road for price cuts and new models for 360. But if there is more...

2013: $129 Nano

The Xbox 360 Nano is smaller than the Mini.

2014/2015: $99 Nano

We're getting close to that time of year again. In 2008, there was a price drop in September and game bundles in October. 2009 may be somewhat similar.

September 2009: $179-199 Arcade, $299 Elite

I'm thinking Arcade will stay at $199. But if the SKU isn't upgraded in any way, then there's a 50% chance of $179.

Say goodbye to the Pro. If you remember your history correctly, that was my prediction for 2008. Microsoft decided to keep the Pro last year, but this year may be different if rumors are true. And component/HDMI cables may be removed from the new $299 Elite.

With only two main SKUs, that opens more room for a Limited Edition SKU at $399. It could include hardware upgrades (bigger HDD, Wi-Fi) and popular rated M games (Halo, Call of Duty).

Fall 2010: $149 Mini, $299 Ultimate (Mini/Natal/HDD)

Earlier in 2010 (May-August), prices may drop $30-50 to clear out inventory before Mini/Natal arrive.

May-August 2010: $149 Arcade, $249 Elite

Ars Technica's notorious "mole" had some leaks back in June, whereby he predicted the Elite 360 was going to become the new Pro.
Ars Technica, June 26, 2009 10:25 AM CT:
Expect the Xbox 360 Pro to disappear in July or August, but you're going to see some solid bundles to get those systems moving off store shelves. The Halo 3/Fable 2 bundle the Mole previously tipped us off to shows that Microsoft is willing to put some good games into the box to get people buying.

So what are we going to do without the Pro systems? Nothing. The Elite units, with the 120GB hard drive, are going to become the Pro-level system after an early September price cut. We'll be on the lookout for another holiday bundle as well, and that should hit around October.

Today, leaks have started appearing on the internet of the new 360 "Pro" aka "Elite".

From looking at the box, it would appear they took out the Component/HDMI cables to reduce costs.
This is also confirmed by the image below, which shows the new Arcade box comparing only two SKU's instead of the older Arcade box art (to the left), which looks at three SKU's.

XBox 360 Pro 60GB dropping to $249 next week
...and get a free extra controller(worth $50) to boot.
Plus of course the 120GB Elite down to $299.99 as well.

The "Limited quantities" tag suggests they are going sell the 60GB Pro's in stock, till they are cleared out.

2009 was a dull year for price cuts and bundles. But 2010 should be more like 2008, the year that brought us the $199 Arcade. For 2010, I'd like to see a $149 Arcade and Natal bundled with Elite.

- $149 Arcade (or $199 Arcade with Natal)
- $299 Elite with HDD and Natal

2010 is also the perfect year for a redesign that's a bit smaller and includes Wi-Fi.

For 2010, I'd like to see a $149 Arcade
Canada has gone one better on that one. The 360 Arcade is now going for just $130:

http://www.amazon.ca/Xbox-360-Arcade-Console/dp/B000Z40HO0/ref=pd_ts_vg_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames

Apparently on sale from March 12th to 19th, though it doesn't actualy say so on Amazon, Canada.

It's about time for another round of what could happen.

$149 Arcade
New Console Design
Flash Memory
Internal Wi-Fi
Sega All-Stars Racing

$299 Elite
New Console Design
Natal Sensor Array
250GB HDD
Internal Wi-Fi
Natal Avatar Sports (working title)
One Non-Natal Game

That's a possible SKU duo later this year. What about the next few months? Inventory could use a cleaning with a $50 price drop in June, July, or August.

Jun-Aug: $149 Old Arcade, $249 Old Elite (120GB)
Q4: $149 New Arcade, $299 New Elite (250GB/Natal)
May 18, 2010, 5:12 PM by khaid to chairmansteve
OoooOOOooOOOh, maybe I can get an x360 now with that arcade price. Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption look hot and they don't have pc versions :(
June 15, 2010, 12:36 PM by chairmansteve
As predicted, the older models just got a $50 price drop.

Confirmed
$149 Old Arcade with Banjo/Pinata
$249 Old Elite 120GB with Halo/Forza
$299 New Elite 250GB/WiFi

Now we just need the New Arcade. It could launch in a month or two at $199 and drop to $149 in Q4. We'll need Kinect bundled with at least one SKU to boost its numbers.

Future Estimates (based on $99 Kinect)
Jul-Aug: $199 New Arcade
Oct-Nov: $149 New Arcade
Nov: $299 New Elite with Kinect

However, if Microsoft decides to sell Kinect at $149 and not $99, things change. The $299 Kinect bundle would be an Arcade, not Elite.

Future Estimates (based on $149 Kinect)
Jul-Aug: $199 New Arcade
Nov: $299 New Arcade with Kinect
Nov: $399 New Elite with Kinect (if MS wants another SKU)

Do you predict that they will also drop the price of the proprietary HDD's? I have passed on purchasing quite a bit of downloadable material because I just can't fit anything else onto my 20GB. I need 6.7 GB of the 13 GB of usable space for installs. The 250 GB is only $20 below the Arcade SKU at $130. Perhaps it will drop since they are replacing the old version of the 360?
